What is Tennis Elbow?

Tennis elbow, or lateral epicondylitis, is defined as soreness or pain on the outer edge of the elbow resulting from repeated or overuse of the elbow. If left untreated, the pain may worsen and radiate down the arm to the hand, causing pain while performing simple actions like turning a key in a lock.

Despite the term “tennis elbow,” tennis players only account for about 5% of cases of this disorder. The condition is generally successfully treated with rest, icing, and tennis elbow physical therapy.

Causes of Tennis Elbow

Tennis elbow is most often caused by overuse during activities where the joint is twisted repeatedly (such as swinging a tennis racket). Eventually, this repetitive twisting leads to small tears in the tendons, which causes the pain associated with the condition.

While tennis elbow is common among tennis players, most people with this painful condition get it from doing ordinary tasks, often while using equipment which is too large or too heavy – like swinging a hammer with a grip that is too big for the hand holding it.

Tennis elbow physical therapy is often useful in strengthening the muscles of the elbow and increasing range of motion, preventing the injury from recurring, and can also be effective in treating elbow dislocation.

Symptoms of Tennis Elbow

Symptoms of tennis elbow consist of pain on the upper forearm near the bend of the elbow. The pain may radiate downward toward the wrist and hand, and it may cause discomfort even when picking up a small object. Individuals with tennis elbow may experience pain when extending the arm, or they may not be able to extend the arm completely.

With rest and tennis elbow physical therapy, most patients are able to make a full recovery and resume normal activity.

Treatment Options for Tennis Elbow

When you first begin to experience symptoms of tennis elbow, rest and treatment with ice packs can help to relieve the pain. Pain relievers such as ibuprofen can reduce inflammation and ease the painful sensation of tennis elbow.

Once the elbow begins to feel better, your doctor may prescribe exercise and tennis elbow physical therapy to prevent further injury to the joint.

Elbow dislocation injuries also benefit from tennis elbow physical therapy once they have healed.

The Benefits of Tennis Elbow Physical Therapy

When you undertake a program of tennis elbow physical therapy, there are several forms treatment may take. Your tennis elbow physical therapy instructor may have you participate in several of the following activities, which are also helpful for elbow dislocation injuries:

* Tennis elbow physical therapy exercises which teach proper techniques for using the joint to prevent injury;
* Ultrasound treatment of the joint, where ultrasound is applied to the area to gently heat muscles and improve blood flow to the area in order to promote healing;
* Massage, both before and after exercise. This also improves blood flow to the area and helps to prevent scar tissue from forming;
* Manipulation of the joint to reduce pain and increase flexibility.

With tennis elbow physical therapy, most patients experience improvement within several weeks.

If you have experienced an elbow injury, you know how painful it can be. Whether you have had tennis elbow, a dislocation injury, golfer’s elbow, or a blunt force injury to the joint, the pain radiating down toward your wrist can prevent you from doing such simple tasks as opening a door or raising a glass of water to your mouth.

Fortunately, elbow treatment options such as elbow physical therapy can have you back to normal quickly and help to prevent further injury.

Types of Elbow Injuries

Elbow injuries are common, especially among athletes, and can be caused by sudden trauma or repetitive use. Sudden injuries include pulled muscles, breaks, torn ligaments, and dislocations.

Overuse injuries such as tennis elbow, golfer’s elbow, and “Little Leaguer’s Elbow” are among the most frequently seen elbow problems. In all cases, elbow treatment is aimed at first healing the injury and relieving the pain, then rehabilitating the joint and strengthening it to prevent further injury from occurring.

Symptoms of Elbow Injuries

Elbow injuries can exhibit symptoms such as pain in or around the joint, pain which radiates downward toward the wrist, swelling, numbness, and tingling. Left untreated, symptoms may worsen and can cause complications, especially if the blood vessels or nerves have been damaged. Elbow treatment, such as elbow physical therapy, can assist in healing injuries, rehabilitating the joint, and returning full use and range of motion to the elbow.

Elbow Treatment Options

There are a variety of elbow treatment options, depending on the nature of the injury. With sudden injuries caused by trauma to the joint, you will need to seek immediate medical attention. Whether medication, splinting, or surgery is required depends on the nature and extent of the injury.

With overuse injuries, elbow treatment can be undertaken at home, to an extent. You may discontinue the activity which is causing the pain and rest the elbow, using ice packs and NSAIDS (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) such as ibuprofen to reduce swelling and relieve pain. You may want to see your doctor to rule out any more serious injury which could be causing the elbow pain.

Once your elbow is beginning to feel better, you will want to get started on an elbow treatment program such as a regimen of exercise and physical therapy in order to restore full range of motion to the joint, strengthen the muscles around the elbow, and learn to prevent re-injury of your elbow in the future.

Benefits of Elbow Physical Therapy

Physical therapy is often recommended for elbow treatment after an injury in combination with an exercise program. Physical therapy elbow treatment helps to relieve pain and promote healing in the damaged tissue.

Your physical therapist may use ultrasound to gently warm the deep tissue of the elbow, increasing blood flow to the area and promoting faster healing. Electrical stimulation may also be used to provide relief from pain, and some clinics also use acupuncture as part of a physical therapy program.

Massage and manipulation are also used to effectively treat elbow pain and speed the healing process, returning you to normal activity as quickly as possible.

It all began with the sensation of the new Nintendo Wii Fit. It was a great option for exercising because it is not necessary to leave your house, or to join a gym, or to be seen in public doing stupid things you can’t do because you are not in shape. This Nintendo would give users the option of working out in their own home while feeling the great sensation of playing Nintendo. The idea is to move your body while you play the game as if you were doing it for real. The game I liked the most was a tennis one that I would feel like I was Federer playing when for real I couldn’t play anything. After almost a year of playing with this option, I lost a little weight but a bigger effect happened on me. I got elbow tendonitis. My elbow started hurting painfully. I thought I had just banged it on something and that the pain would soon pass, but it didn’t. Elbow tendonitis is also an internal pain that would sting every time I tried to move my arm and elbow. I had no idea that it was elbow tendonitis but I knew it was bad because of how painful it was. After a few weeks of having this pain I could practically not move my arm anymore. So it became pretty obvious I needed to pay a visit to my doctor so he could tell me what was wrong with my arm. He ran some tests on me and asked me what strange movements I had done with my arm. He diagnosed elbow tendonitis. He says the main cause was the Nintendo game. It sounds crazy but I have learned recently that I am not the only person that has elbow tendonitis because of these games. The main factor that before we play these games, we never stretch. Stretching is a very important part of exercising because it gives your muscles and ligaments a change to get used to the kind of effort they will be put through. When you play the game in the Nintendo, you follow the instructions the screen gives and it never says anything about stretching. You would never imagine that because of not stretching and doing these kinds of movements you will be likely to getting elbow tendonitis. The problem is in my case I liked to play tennis so much and my movements weren’t precise it put a lot of pressure on my elbow which I was constantly moving and bending to “hit the ball” that elbow tendonitis developed over time. Now I am in an elbow treatment with a physical therapist. She comes to my house three times a week to give me elbow treatment and allow the ligaments to become able to move and stretch again. The elbow treatment for elbow tendonitis is helping a lot. I recommend anyone who thinks the Nintendo Wii is a great exercise, to be more careful about it and always stretch before their sessions because a simple game can develop into a very serious issue such as elbow tendonitis.

If you are a sportsman, then there is a high possibility that you might have suffered, or maybe could get to suffer of an Elbow Dislocation. An Elbow Dislocation is a problem that makes your elbow bones get out of place, out of their socket, or also it could be said that an Elbow Dislocation makes your elbow to be disjointed. When they occur, it could come with some bone braking, and commonly really painful. However, some Elbow Dislocation could be fixed with the simple correct placement of the elbow, and some Elbow Dislocation could take some time of healing because of the braking of some bones, as well as damaged inner and outside tissues, so it all really depends on the damage your Elbow Dislocation could have been provoked for, and the damage that was caused because of your Elbow Dislocation.

When serious Elbow Dislocation occurs, there could be some damage to the nerves and the nervous system on the hand, if this happens, then you might be looking at some serious period of recovering in which physical therapy is going to be necessary for you to have correct movement. As an overall, feel on the rest of your arm and hand, if this is what it is able to do then great care needs to be taken and if not, you need to take some good care of yourself specially with the kind of sports you were playing before you had your injury. Some Elbow Dislocation occurs when people are involved in some sort of a hard fall and others are just accidents, just like car accidents and others.

Some of the most common Elbow Dislocation symptoms are: severe pain followed by some swelling, the loss of feeling is present, most commonly on the hand and wrist, and some veins and arteries also run through the elbow, so it is really a common thing to have these damaged.

When having this kind of injury, immediate medical assistance must be needed, since a doctor is going to be able to diagnose, and to put your elbow back into place. Not to mention that it is always good to have some x-rays of your injury, and to know the extend of it. It is a good thing to have medical attention. Lets pretend you have this injury and you do not get medical attention, you could even get an infection out of some inner tissue, and the worst part will be the proper cure for your infection than your dislocation. So always make the right decision, and take good care of yourself. So you don’t have to go through such painful injury to be protected. It is only our responsibility, and we should always do our best to achieve maximum protection, in other words, sometimes hard contact sports are really risks that we do take by our own. However, there are safety measures to be taken, so it is always a good thing to know how to protect yourself.

As you probably remember, I wrote an article explaining the basics about elbow physical therapy and how effective it was in the treatment of elbow injuries and fractures of any kind, whether tennis elbow or even golfers elbow. In this new article, we will focus on golfers elbow, a pain and inflammation that occurs on the inner side of your elbow, where the tendons of your forearm muscles are attached to the bony bump on the inside of your elbow. The reason why it is called golfers elbow is the fact that golf is one of the activities that cause it, while there are other activities involved as well.

This problem is also known as medical epicondylitis, and it is very similar to tennis elbow. The only difference is that it does not occur on the outside of your elbow but on the inside. The pain of Golfers elbow does not have to keep you off the course or away from your favorite activities. With rest and appropriate treatment, you can get back into the swing of things. As I previously mentioned, there are many activities besides playing golf that can lead to this problem, such as racket sports like ping pong or tennis, throwing sports (improper baseball techniques), and other activities such as painting, typing or others that involve repetitive arm, wrist or hand movements. When you visit the doctor, he or she will take X-ray or MRI (Magnetic resonance imaging) as a resource to decide what type of treatment betters suits in your case.

The sooner you start getting treatment, the sooner you will be able to return to your usual activities, and that is why it is important to follow different guidelines to let that happen. To cure golfers elbow you need to do the following: rest, ice the affected area, stretch and strengthen the affected area, minimize the load on your elbow, take a pain reliever and consider other medications to get relief in a short period of time. First of all it is important to rest by putting the repetitive activity on hold until the pain is over, because if return to that activity too soon your golfers elbow problem may even get worse. After rest, putting an ice cubes or packs on the affected to your elbow for 15 to 20 minutes at a time, four times a day for several days will help you get some relief (wrap the ice packs in a thin towel to protect your skin).

To cure golfers elbow, there are great techniques that your doctor can give you for stretching and strengthening the elbow. Reducing the load on your elbow by wrapping it with an elastic bandage is a good option. Other therapies for golfers elbow include medications, pain relievers like ibuprofens (Motrin), acetaminophen (Tylenol) or aspirins. If you have questions about golfers elbow or need doctor’s assistance, don’t hesitate and visit your doctor the sooner you can.

A pain in elbow is an extremely common complaint and there are many common causes of this problem. Before seeking treatment, it is important to make an accurate diagnosis of the cause of your symptoms so that appropriate treatment can be directed at the cause and avoid medical complications. Humans use their limbs to do most of their activities and as more are more people are using their computers to do their work, elbows are still important since they are the pivot in our arms. One of the common causes of pain in elbow is lateral epicondylitis which is also called tennis elbow. Patients with this condition have pain over the outside of the joint and they usually have difficulty getting hold of an object. This problem does not mostly affect tennis players despite the name. Another cause of pain in elbow is medical epicondylitis which is similar to tennis elbow, difference being the fact that the discomfort is around the joint although the symptoms are on the inner side of the joint. It is also called golfers elbow, but the condition is not common in golfers. These are the two most common causes of pain in elbow and medical attention should be sought if detected.

Another cause of pain in elbow is olecranon bursitis and it is most common behind the elbow joint. A patient suffering from this condition usually has swelling and tenderness behind the joint over the bony prominence that is called the olecranon. Another cause of pain is tendonitis and it occurs in the tendons around the joint.

Other causes of pain in elbow include cubital tunnel syndrome which results from the compression of the ulnal and which causes shooting pains along the forearm numbness and tingling of the fingers, radial tunnel syndrome which is not very common and elbow fractures which include olecranon fractures and radial head fractures.

There are several signs that will tell a person that they have elbow conditions apart from pain in elbow. These signs include Inability to carry objects or to use the arm, deformity of the joint, inability to flex the arm, swelling or bruising around the joint and any other unusual symptom around the arm.

One way to take care of pain in elbow is to rest the joint and to allow any inflammation to subside. However, it is important to note that prolonged immobilization causes stiff joint. Yet another thing you can do to get rid of elbow pains is to use ice on the elbow or to apply heat.

Physical therapy has been proven to treat almost all orthopedic conditions and so does anti-inflammatory medication which is prescribed by the doctors especially for patients suffering from arthritis, bursitis, and tendonitis. One can also use cortisone injections to take care of pain in elbow, but all these treatments should be done with doctor’s advice.

Many sport athletes and people suffering injuries in the elbows are recurring to elbow physical therapy nowadays with the purpose of getting relief as quickly as possible. In this article, I would like to provide you with the basics about elbow physical therapy, as well as I will explain why it is so important to choose the proper elbow physical therapy according to your type of elbow problem in order to obtain the best results out of treatment. But before I start talking about elbow physical therapy, I have to give you an idea of what the elbow is, in case that some of you don’t know. The elbow is a center joint between the lower end of the humerus bone located in the upper arm and the upper end of the radius and ulnar bones in the lower arm.

Usually, the elbow bone is used in activities like playing tennis, painting or typing a letter at the computer. However, sometimes we might overuse this bone and that is when we are subject to suffer injuries or fractures. The most commonly known elbow problems include arthritis, bursitis, fractures and injury, but there are many types of elbow problems that require doctor’s assistant or physiotherapy.

When it comes to tennis elbow, there is a rehabilitation program including exercise and elbow physical therapy to help healing the tendons, restore normal range of motion, and build muscle strength and endurance at the same time, and that is the reason why people require this therapy if they want to be able to perform regular duties.

It is crucial that your doctor or physical therapist develops a home program to help you restore your elbow movement and prevent additional injury in the near future. Your therapist will explain each exercise; this includes the correct techniques and the number of times you should repeat each movement for the elbow physical therapy to be as effective as possible.

When using elbow physical therapy, the exercises that will help you to build or maintain good fitness are important elements for your recovery. You can do some walking, cycling, water aerobics, jogging, and other aerobic exercises to increase your heart and lung fitness and it will increase general strength and endurance, without making your injury worse.

When it comes to elbow physical therapy, we can count on several different types of therapy, such as the following: learning new techniques to move the elbow and using different equipment for activities to help prevent further injury, ultrasound, electrical stimulation or transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS), massage and manual therapy.

Finally, using exercise and physical therapy after surgery are important for your recovery and they both may promote healing and restore strength and flexibility for your elbow. Tennis elbow recovery time may vary from one person to another and may take several weeks or several months, depending on the patient and the success of the elbow physical therapy chosen.
